- Non-Invasive: Unlike painting walls, which may require landlord approval and restoration upon moving out, painting furniture is a non-invasive DIY project that can be easily reversed. Renters can enjoy the freedom to experiment with different colors and styles without worrying about damaging the property.
- Portable: Painted furniture is portable, so renters can take their favorite pieces with them when they move to a new home. This flexibility allows renters to invest time and effort into DIY projects knowing that they can enjoy the results wherever they go.
- Customization: Painting furniture offers endless possibilities for customization. Renters can choose from a wide range of paint colors, finishes, and techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces that perfectly suit their taste and complement their decor.
Overall, painting furniture is a renter-friendly DIY project that allows individuals to personalize their space, enhance its aesthetic appeal, and make a temporary living situation feel more like home. It’s a creative and rewarding way to transform a rented space without the commitment or constraints of permanent alterations.
Being a renter comes with its own unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to decorating your living space. While you may dream of transforming your apartment or house into a reflection of your personal style, there are often limitations imposed by rental agreements. From restrictions on painting walls to limitations on major renovations, renters often find themselves navigating a delicate balance between making their space feel like home while adhering to the rules set by landlords or property managers. Despite these constraints, renters have learned to embrace creative solutions, opting for removable decor, temporary fixes, and DIY projects that can easily be undone when it’s time to move on. While the limitations of renting can be frustrating at times, they also inspire innovation, resourcefulness, and a unique sense of adaptability in turning any space into a welcoming and personalized sanctuary.

Painting Furniture in a Rental Space
Join Brittney as she guides you through her process of painting an IKEA lazy susan in her rental apartment!
Project Supplies:
- IKEA Lazy Susan Table
- Newspaper/drop cloth for surface projection
- Medium/fine grit sand paper
- All purpose cleaner
- Reusable water cup for brush cleaning
- Paper towel / reusable cloth
- Dune Grass chalk-based paint by Country Chic Paint
- Oval Brush
- (Optional) Super cute supervisor with 4 paws
Lay down a drop cloth or old newspapers to protect the floor from paint spills. Make sure the workspace is well-ventilated for better paint drying. Thoroughly clean the surface of the lazy Susan table using soap, water, and a sponge. Allow the table to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. Lightly sand the surface of the table using fine-grit sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere better and create a smoother finish. Wipe away any dust with a clean cloth.
Mix your paint. In this video, Brittney used the color Dune Grass. Shake and stir it thoroughly to ensure an even consistency. Using a paint brush or sponge, apply the first coat of paint to the entire surface of the lazy susan. Allow the paint to dry fully (about 1-2 hours). Depending on the coverage and desired finish, apply additional coats of paint as needed, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
For added protection and durability, consider applying Clear Coat over the painted surface. This step is especially important for high-traffic areas. You are now done your project! Admire your newly transformed piece of furniture and enjoy the fresh, country-chic vibe it brings to your space!
When sanding furniture in a rental where outdoor space is not accessible, there are several ways to minimize mess and ensure a smooth finish indoors:
- Choose Hand-Sanding: Opt for hand-sanding instead of using power tools to avoid excess noise and dust creation.
- Work in a Well-Ventilated Area: Open a window or door to allow for airflow and ventilation while sanding. Consider using a fan to help circulate air and prevent dust buildup in the room.
- Use a Sanding Block: Use a sanding block or sandpaper wrapped around a flat object to hand-sand furniture pieces. This provides more control and precision, especially in tight spaces or intricate details.
- Cover and Protect Surfaces: Cover nearby furniture, floors, and surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from dust and debris. This makes cleanup easier and prevents damage to other items in the room.
- Work in Small Sections: Focus on sanding one small section of the furniture piece at a time to minimize dust and mess. This allows you to maintain control over the sanding process and ensures a more even finish.
- Clean Up Regularly: Stop periodically to clean up dust and debris from the sanded surface and surrounding area. Use a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth to remove dust and prevent it from spreading throughout the room.
By following these tips and techniques, you can safely and effectively sand furniture indoors in a rental space, even without access to outdoor areas. Just be sure to take precautions to minimize mess and maintain a clean and healthy living environment.
