This kitchen island was begging for some repairs from Robin from In Fine Feather Furniture. She chose white paint in the color, Crinoline, and Hemp Oil to revive the wood. Keep reading to learn about her whole process!

This solid wood kitchen island had seen better days when I purchased it. It looked like it had been kept in a garage as a storage/work bench. It was dirty, dented and the finish was peeling.

After a good cleaning I had my husband help me plane the top and the leaf extension. This saved a lot of time stripping and/or sanding. After he planed it, I used my palm sander and got it down to a nice smooth, even finish.

Once the top was ready I moved onto the base. I basically disassembled the entire shelf underneath so that I could paint the slats for the shelf nice and evenly, rather than trying to get a brush in the gaps. I sanded out any major scratches and dings then got to work painting.

I used Country Chic Paint in the color Crinoline. This is a very pure, natural white which I think turned out to be a perfect choice.

I did use a stain blocking primer on the 4 main legs because there was some yellow bleeding through from the wood.

After about 2/3 coats of paint I hand sanded with very fine sandpaper to get rid of any brushstrokes and also to take away the chalky feel of the clay based paint. Lightly sanding the paint gives it a buttery smooth texture! Once the painting was finished I left it to cure over a few days.

During this time I began to condition the natural wood top. I want this island to be able to be used like a butcher block so I used Country Chic Paint’s all natural Hemp Oil. This oil is amazing! It is so easy to apply and the wood just loves it. Over a couple days I put 3 coats on and then using a lint free cloth to buff it to an even finish. The natural color it brings out in raw wood just can’t be compared to any stain or glaze. I used the oil on the drawer front as well to give a nice accent.

Lastly while the Hemp Oil was soaking in I sealed the white paint with a thin coat of Clear Coat. This gave the piece just a little extra durability in the kitchen without effecting color of the clay based paint.
